  • Šárka STRACHOVA is living proof that theory can be successfully implemented on the slopes. Born February 11th in Benecko in the Czech Republic to a family with a plan: to mould a champion skier. Her theorist father had never skied but had studied long and hard before drawing up a theoretical framework for the slalom, which when implemented he was convinced would produce a winning run. It is no surprise then that the Czech alpine skier specialises in the slalom event and she shot to fame in the same discipline in the World Championships. Šárka makes up the Ski Team Krkonoš along with her elder brother Petr, both coached by their father.

In 2005 she claimed her first medal and that of her country with a bronze in the slalom at the Santa Caterina World Championships and placed fifth in the combined. Two years later in Are, she clinched the gold in the slalom and narrowly missed out on a double medal performance when she finished 4th in the super combined by a mere 0.2 seconds. Then in 2009, in Val d'Isère, she took the only medal missing from her collection, the silver.

She arrived on the podium for the first time in the World Cup when on January 4, 2007, she placed third in the slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia and in doing so ended a 21-year long Czech absence from the echelons of the World Cup, since Olga Charvátová finished runner-up in Bromont, Quebec on March 22, 1986.
