"How did I celebrate my birthday? With a good weight training in the gym..." Daniela Merighetti has just turned 31 on 5th July. She is back in training after the best season in her career in which the top Italian female World Cup speed racer celebrated her first victory on the highest level in the downhill in Cortina and scored a third place finish in the super-G in Bansko, both of which came nine years after her first podium finish in her career in a GS in Are in 2003.

“Although there’s still a lot of time until the new season, it is important to prepare yourself well during this period, and that’s what we are doing,” says Merighetti. “Everything is going according to the plan. I skipped this week’s training in Novarello, but that was planned so. After the week in Ravenna, I have conducted my dry-land training in Brescia and Bergamo under the supervision of our conditioning coach Alberto Platinetti. Next week we will return to snow; after two months off snow I am really excited to return to the glacier.”

What did Merighetti, who is called Dada by most people, wish for her birthday? "To race another season on the very top level! That’s important for keeping the excitement and interest. I would be happy to finish the next season among the top 10 in super-G where I have made great progress.” As icing on the cake, the season will also see the Worlds in Schladming: "I was not impressed by the course in Schladming at the Finals in March but we had spring snow and really warm temperatures so the situation could be different in winter conditions..."
