Fog wins in Bansko
Bansko, Bulgaria – For the return of the ladies' world cup tour in the famed ski town for the third time since 2009, mother nature unfortunately didn’t' play along and forced the jury and the organisers to cancel Friday's super-G race. It snowed between 10 to 15 cm overnight and with the high humidity in the air, fog formed along the course as the morning went on. After multiple delays, the final call was to call off the first of the three scheduled races of the week.
“In the end, there was still too much fog, so we had no visibility and this is of course very critical when we have a speed event,” FIS Race Director Atle Skaardal explained. “So that is the reason why we had to cancel the race.”
“The track was good. We had a lot of work because we had a lot of snow this morning, more than expected. Course workers did a great job and the track was ready on time. But of course there was some soft snow around. And you need to have a good visibility when the snow situation is not perfect.”
The ladies will have a second chance to battle it out on the “Marc Girardelli” piste, as another super-G race is scheduled for tomorrow Saturday at 11:15 local time (10:15 CET).
