Frida Hansdotter fastest in Åre slalom 1st run!
Åre, Sweden – Amazing atmosphere again for today’s slalom. A very thin layer of new snow fell in the night, but was no big deal for the organisers and the slip crews who handled it easily. According to the athletes before the race, the snow was perfect and holding well.
27 year old Frida Hansdotter paced the opening run in front of a home crowd in a time of 53.88 seconds. USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin, who got her first ever podium this season in Levi, finished 2nd, just 0.15 seconds behind. After having four different women in top five slalom finishes this year, the Swedish team showed all its potential tonight with Maria Pietilae-Holmer ending in 3rd place, only 0.24 seconds behind her teammate.
“It is incredible to be in the lead after the first run here “at home”. The atmosphere in our team is great. We all get along so well. We like training together so much and his positive feeling was demonstrated on the slope today. I have to stay focused now; the gap with the favorites is so small”, confessed local Frida Hansdotter
She could get her first ever World Cup victory if she skies that well in the second run. Favorites Tina Maze (4th, + 0.29), Tanja Poutiainen (6th, + 0.56) and Maria Hoefl-Riesch (7th, + 0.73) are not far behind. This promises a tough battle for victory in the second run.
Two big names were missing on the start list today. Overall World Cup holder Lindsey Vonn decided to travel back home after last weekend ‘s disappointment in Val d’Isère to take a break and get the energy back she needs to ski at her best level. Marlies Schild unfortunately injured her right knee during the morning training session and had to fly back to Austria immediately to undergo medical examinations. The Austrian will hopefully be back very soon to showcase her exceptional talent and try to break Vreni Schneider’s record of 34 World Cup slalom wins. She could have tied it today!
Second run start at 19:00 CET.
