WENGEN, Switzerland – After the first scheduled downhill training got cancelled on Tuesday due to the abundant snowfalls, Wednesday turned out to be a perfect day for racers to test the longest downhill slope on the circuit.

The late, 13.30 start time allowed the Organizer to push out of the race line most of the snow which forced for the first training’s cancellation and by the time racer number one left the starting gate, the slope was in great shape.

Team Italia seems to have gotten confident on the Lauberhorn right away as Werner Heel and Peter Fill clocked the two fastest times of the day. Heel crossed the finish line of the 4422m long course in 2:39:04 while his teammate was only 0.30 seconds slower. In third place Johan Clarey finished 0.44 off the leader’s pace.

“I didn’t think I was this fast but knowing I can be definitely gives me confidence for the races,” Heel said after catching his breath after the long run.

As most racers today, Heel praised the work which had been done on the slope and was very pleased with the conditions.

“We will see how the slope develops, some sections were still a bit soft due to the heavy snowfall from yesterday but they have done a great job and some sections are already icy. I am confident that by Saturday the course will be in great shape."

Two Italians ahead in the first training can’t be a bad sign and these guys are definitely aiming at holding on to their top positions.

“For sure we want to keep this trend of being ahead into the race days,” Heel explained.  “We have already shown that we can be a strong team and it would be awesome to start the New Year with a result similar to today’s.”
