29 years old German skier Kathrin Hoelzl announced today the end of her sports career. Hoelzl’s best career highlight remains a giant slalom gold World Championship medal from Val d'Isere in 2009. During the 2009/10 season Hoelzl won the giant slaloms in Aspen and Lienz, finished eighth in the overall and first in the giant slalom standings.

Over the past couple of years Hoelzl started struggling with a mysterious muscle disease which manifested itself in the form of painful body cramps after each training.  Even simple everyday activities such as climbing stairs everyday were agony for Hoelzl and even thought her medical team tried everything, the symptoms remained unchanged. Today, the German Ski Association announced Hoelzl would not be returning to competition.

We wish Kathrin all the best in the future, but most of all lots of health.
