Marc Berthod's new focus on speed
Marc Berthod won bronze in the super combined at the Worlds in Are 2007 and stood on top of World Cup podium in Adelboden twice, in 2008 (GS) and 2007 (SL). After still skiing into the top ten in the 2010/11 season, his best finish in 2012 was 16th in Crans-Montana. Berthod took some time to discuss his future plans with FISAlpine.com.
FISAlpine: You had a tough season last season. How does one zero the situation and refocus on the future after something like that?
Marc Berthod: I tried to finish up the season as soon as possible and find myself some new challenges. I now have a contract with a new ski brand that is providing me with renewed confidence. In addition I would like to develop further in the speed events and add giant slalom and super-G as well as downhill to my program.
FISAlpine: So you have joined Salomon and will move to the speed side, how come?
MB: I needed to reorient myself, I was not happy with things as they were and needed a new focus. I am happy to be able to go in this new direction with Salomon.
FISAlpine: How was the spring and early summer for you – how are you going with training, any hols?
MB: The spring was great. I skied until May and the conditions were truly excellent. Now I am focused on fitness and of course I also took some time for holidays.
FISAlpine: It is a World Championship season coming up – where do you want to be at the end of March 2013?
MB: I would like to have had some really good runs and develop well in the speed events.
FISAlpine: The Swiss tech team is continuing to have challenges – why do you think that is?
MB: Firstly, we had many injured athletes but beyond that, I do not know either. In my case things just did not come together this winter and I did not find the right feeling in slalom at all.
FISAlpine: You are one of the athletes that also brings a strong personality into the ski circus. You recently joined Shred, too. Name three things that characterize you?
MB: I like to swim against the current. I am curious. And I never miss a trick.
FISAlpine: You attended the FIS Congress at end of May in Korea. How was that experience? Can you imagine staying involved with the sport after your career?
MB: It was a great learning experience to be part of the World Championships presentation with St Moritz. It was exciting. I also had some interesting discussions with diverse people from the world of skiing. I do not yet know for sure what I will do after my career – maybe something with ski sports; I indeed do have some ideas already.
FISAlpine: What’s the plan for the next two months?
MB: Training, training, training.. and some time off...
