MMA fastest in Val d'Isère 2nd DH training
Val d’Isère, France – The second DH training was won by Marie Marchand-Arvier in front of home crowd in a time of 1:51.45. She was followed by Tina Weirather (LIE) who is doing her come back after suffering from a light leg injury that kept her out of competition for few weeks. The 2011-2012 DH World Cup runner-up finished only 0.01 second behind MMA proving one can count on her to race for victory in the season's 2nd DH on Friday. Germany’s Maria Höfl-Riesch took 3rd position, 0.17 seconds behind. Maria and Tina Maze, who placed 7th today, are the only girls who showed consistency finishing among the best in both trainings.
The training conditions slightly changed compared to yesterday. Visibility was worse because of the middle clouds that started coming in during the morning. It prevented the racers to properly see the bumps of the “Oreiller- Killy” ski slope. Lindsey Vonn, who already won the first two DH this season, was a victim of this bad visibility and skied out.
MMA confessed after the training that her performance of the day was really good for her confidence that she has been lacking a bit recently and that this would help her to be strong on the skis for tomorrow’s race.
Currently number one in the overall ranking, Tina Maze conceded after today’s training that being in front and having the “pack” chasing her was less pressure for her than the other way around. “I feel good, I am calm and I am skiing well, it was definitely more difficult last year when I had to catch up with girls in front, often ending 2nd or 3rd.” Tomorrow’s win in the Downhill could be more open and uncertain!
