Reichelt tops the first training in Santa Caterina
After a short Christmas break, the Audi FIS Ski World Cup is back in Santa Caterina for a downhill scheduled on Tuesday 29th December. The first official training day was pretty tough, since most of the athletes didn’t ski the whole course, but from a timing perspective, Hannes Reichelt clocked the fastest time.
“The feeling was not so good, it’s really tough and bumpy, and in December the light is very flat, so after Christmas it’s a very tough course”, said Reichelt.
No time to celebrate for the Austrian, who is also the “athletes’ representative” for the race in Santa Caterina. In the finish area, he took time to speak with all the athletes about their feelings on the course and will report to the Chief of Race in order to maybe adapt some sections.
Italian Christoph Innerhofer laid down a good run and ended 2nd, +0.07 off Reichelt’s pace. After a reserved start of the season, the South Tyrolean is happy to be back in the top positions.
“The slope is beautiful, as usual, as last year, during the trainings a few days ago. It’s tough, physically very strenuous, but there are very cool turns in it”, said Innerhofer after his run.
Unlike his teammate, Peter Fill is in an excellent shape and could already claim two podiums this season. Even though he didn't pass all the gates today, he is 3rd of today’s training, +1.26 behind Reichelt.
“The course is very difficult, with flat light and lots of bumps, especially in the lower part. But it is great ! You need to really push hard and it’s very tiring, so we need to manage our forces and make sure we can still attack on the race day, because no mistake is allowed on this slope if you want a podium placement” said Fill.
Another training run is scheduled tomorrow, starting at 11.45 CET, before the big showdown on the Deborah Compagnoni slope in Santa Caterina.
