Finnish Alpine ski racer Sanni Leinonen announced that she is putting an end to her career. 22-year-old Leinonen debuted in the World Cup in 2006 at the age of 16 and her best result was 7th place finish in Maribor (SLO) in January 2010 whilst she scored her first World Cup points in Levi in November 2006.

Leinonen sustained an ACL injury about a year and a half ago which required a six-month break from professional sport.

"I did not think about quitting at the time of the injury, in fact it made me feel determined to come back. The recovery went well and everything seemed to be fine from the outside. However this time away from competitive sport also showed me what's there outside of that life," wrote Leinonen in her statement. She added that the high number of days on the road and the high demands of top performance sport contributed to her decision.

Leinonen plans to continue be involved in sport. She has begun studies to become a sports instructor in Rovaniemi.

“Sports is a way of living for me and I plan to remain involved. I want to share the experiences I have collected with others,” Leinonen concludes.
