Sofia Goggia undergoes knee surgery
The medical examinations following Sofia Goggia's crash in the second downhill race at Lake Louise last week revealed a rupture of the cruciate ligament and a meniscus lesion on the left knee.
The 21-year-old Italian racer will undergo surgery on Wednesday in Milano. The recovery time will be determined later, but she is already unfortunately ruled out for the entire 2013/2014 season.
Despite her young age, Goggia has an important past in terms of injuries. In February 2012, she already damaged her left knee ligaments and fractured the tibial plateau during a Europa Cup race.
With 19 Europa Cup top-fives since January 2012 (four firsts, four seconds, and one third place finish), a Europa Cup DH title last season, as well as 2nd place in the overall EC standings, and a spectacular fourth place in Super-G, and a seventh place in Super-Combined at the recent Schladming World Championships, La Bergamasca was full of hope for a good World Cup season.
We wish Sofia a quick recovery and hope to see her back next winter in great shape for some top-class results.
