Stacey Cook offering Alpine scholarships

27 July 2011 05:33

US ski racer Stacey Cook proudly presents another edition of the Stacey Cook/Sun Valley Ski Tools Scholarship (SVST). Four winners, chosen by Cook and SVST will receive USD $500 worth of ski tools and USD $500 worth of ski wax, enough for the entire 2011/12 season.

Applications are available for download now at www.staceycook.net with the deadline set for Wednesday, Sept. 1.

Now in its fifth season, the scholarship recognizes four J2 or J3 level athletes who exemplify talent, a good attitude, community involvement and a commitment to alpine skiing.

The program began when Cook was a junior racer and received support from SVST along with fellow US team racers Marco Sullivan, Erik Fisher, Hailey Duke and Dane Spencer, who is now on the US men's team's coaching staff.

After a brief hiatus, Cook asked SVST to rejuvenate the program in the form of a scholarship and began asking for applications in 2007.

"It's a way for young athletes to get a big boost from a sponsor that has always been so good to me, but it also gives them an introduction into what being a professional athlete means. It helps them learn how to work with sponsors and start to think along the lines of a business," said Cook.

"The application isn't easy and that says a lot about the athletes who win the scholarship. I've had parents tell me that they're not concerned whether their son or daughter gets the scholarship or not, they just want them to do the application because they learn so much about themselves and what it takes to represent themselves well."
