The world’s best female skiers in Zagreb, ready for the big showdown on Sljeme
ZAGREB, Croatia – The world’s top female skiers arrived in Zagreb on the eve of the women’s slalom Audi FIS Ski World Cup “Vip Snow Queen Trophy” Zagreb-Sljeme 2013, which is being held this Friday, 4th January.
Currently top leader in World Cup overall Ladies’ standings, Slovenia’s Tina Maze says she would like to win in Zagreb, because that’s one of her unfulfilled dreams.
”I expect a lot of fans from Slovenia, they are very important to me, but that is not the most important thing, because the Croats always cheer for me like I was one of their own”, said Tina Maze.
It’s fantastic, she said, that she arrived in Zagreb for the first time as a leading star, because that has not been the case before. Although the season is long, Tina is convinced that none of other girls can change anything anymore and that her advantage of almost 500 points is out of their reach. She would like to, however, one day win in all disciplines, because it was achieved by only a few, including Croatia’s Janica Kostelić.
Runner-up in the overall standings, Germany’s Maria Höfl-Riesch hopes to put together two good runs on Sljeme without major errors. Since she always aims to race the best possible slalom and get to the podium, she believes that she can succeed in Zagreb, after some good training in Austria.
“Tina Maze is in great shape, she has accomplished what not even Janica ever succeeded, in almost every race she’s on the podium. I cannot influence what she does, so I’m trying my best, concentrating on myself to get as much out of every race as possible. I don’t even think about whether I will be able to get level with Tina, the season is long “, said Maria Höfl-Riesch.
Slovakian Veronika Velez Zuzulova arrives in Zagreb immediately after winning the New Year’s parallel slalom in Munich, where in the final she bested Tina Maze.
“I felt relieved after victories in Munich and Semmering, because Slovak journalists were increasingly wondering will I ever win again, after many second and third places in the World Cup. Now I can finally get relaxed and just ski, ” said Zuzulova, who always considered the Sljeme slalom one of her most loved races in the World Cup.
Twice crowned Snow Queen, Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen, is always going for victory on Sljeme.
“I love Sljeme races, the atmosphere is always great, and the organization is top-notch. I always feel relaxed in Zagreb, both in training and in race”, said Tanja Poutiainen.
This year Ladies’ slalom for Audi FIS Ski World Cup “Vip Snow Queen Trophy” is a night race, which makes the event even more attractive. Start of the first run is on 4th January at 3:45 pm, and the second run starts at 6:30 pm. The day before the race, on Thursday 3rd January from 6 pm to 8 pm hours, the public draw will be held at Zagreb’s main square, with entertainment program for citizens.
Croatia will be represented in Sljeme Ladies’ race by Sofija Novoselić and Andrea Komšić.
