Zuzulova leads Flachau night slalom after 1st run
Flachau, Austria – 68 racers battled it out under the lights in difficult conditions for the sixth slalom of the season that saw Slovakia's Veronika Velez Zuzulova make the most of her bib number 3 and put in a solid first run on Tuesday night.
In front of a huge crowd with more than 10'000 cheering fans, Zuzulova timed 52.15 on the Hermann Maier course to lead Switzerland's Wendy Holdener by 0.54 seconds and Sarka Strachova of Czech Republic by 0.84 seconds, who respectively had bib 2 and 4.
“I just tried to attack and to enjoy,” Zuzulova said in the finish area. “It was a fast run, but there is still one more run to go, so I have to stay focused.”
It snowed all afternoon and the temperatures were slightly over zero degrees, making it difficult to have regular conditions for all the racers.
Sweden's Frida Hansdotter, the most consistent slalom skier and winner of last year's race in Flachau, was seventh out of the start gate and struggled with the soft snow and an already rutted track. She had to be content with rank six, 1.32 seconds off the pace.
