Inside the Fence was on course yesterday during the pre-race warm up in Drammen as athletes prepared for the sprint competition. Athletes reached speeds for 50 km per hour on the downhill section of the course.
Olympic sprint champion Maiken Caspersen Falla (NOR) showed she can win in either technique as she skied down Marit Bjoergen (NOR) on the homestretch to win the classic sprint in Drammen. Ola Vigen Hattestad, also the Olympic sprint champion was back on top of the podium after a fall in the finals in Lahti last weekend. With his victory Hattestad now leads the sprint overall standings by 41 points ahead of Eirik Brandsdal heading into the final sprint of the season.
It is 10 years since Bjørgen won her first sprint in Drammen, in February 2004, ahead of Virpi Kuitunen and Elina Hietamäki (FIN). Brandsdal has won four of the last six classic sprint wins by a Norwegian in World Cup and stages in World Cup tours. Petter Northug won the remaining two.
Several National teams have announced their entry lists for this week of World Cup competitions in Norway with the classic sprint in Drammen on Wednesday and the 30/50 km at Holmenkollen this weekend.
