Bjørgen and Gløersen fastest in Davos sprints
Marit Bjørgen and Anders Gløersen both of Norway have won today's World Cup sprints in Davos, Switzerland. For Bjørgen it was her second win in two days and the 62nd win of her career. For Gloeersen it was his first since Holmenkollen in 2010.
Bjørgen won in a photo finish with the USA's Kikkan Randall and in third was Denise Herrmann of Germany.
In the men's competition Gløersen was clear of the field to win the men's sprint ahead of Martti Jylhae of Finland in second and Sergey Ustiugov of Russia in third. For Jylhae and Ustiugov it was their first ever World Cup podiums.
Marit Bjørgen (NOR)
Kikkan was very strong in the semifinals. So I knew it would be tough in the finals. I fought all the way to the line and I am very happy about the result.
Kikkan Randall (USA)
I had good energy today. In the finals twice I had trouble with other girls, which took some of it. When I made my move on the hill I was not as strong as I hoped. At the finish I knew they were coming and tried my best but Marit was better today.
Denise Herrmann (GER)
I’m really happy today, it is the second podium of my career. It was a perfect day for me, perfect weather. The sun was shining, it’s totally crazy that I finished on the podium. I did not have a good start in the finals, but I tried to stay relaxed and I gave it all in the second lap. Luckily it was enough for the podium.
Anders Gløersen (NOR)
It’s my first victory since Holmenkollen 2010. It was very tough. I was happy to be in the first semifinal to get more time for my legs to recover. After the semifinals I started to feel lactic acid in my legs.
Marrtti Jylhae (FIN)
It’s amazing. Davos was not my favourite place before. It was the worst place for me to ski but now I think I have to change the way how I feel about Davos. In the finals I was struggling little bit as I had to fight for my position. When I saw an opening I went for it. Anders worked very hard, I could not overtake him but 2nd place is like a victory.
Sergey Ustiugov (RUS)
It feels great to be on the podium. It’s my first World Cup podium. The course fit me very well in Davos. I tried to keep the pace high and stay in front. I gave everything I had in the home stretch.
