KRASNAYA POLYANA - Marit BJOERGEN (NOR) will be bidding for a record-equalling sixth gold medal and 10th medal overall she starts in ladies' 30km freestyle at the Laura Cross Country Ski and Biathlon Centre on Saturday.

  • Marit BJOERGEN (NOR) can match Lidia SKOBLIKOVA (URS, speed skating) and Lyobov YEGOROVA (EUN/RUS, cross country skiing) in winning six golds at the Olympic Winter Games.
  • A medal of any colour would put BJOERGEN on 10 medals overall, equalling the record of Stefania BELMONDO (ITA) and Raisa SMETANINA (URS), who both achieved this in cross country skiing.
  • Norway has yet to win the ladies 30km event in cross country skiing.
  • Justyna KOWALCZYK (POL) won the 30km classic style at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games ahead of BJOERGEN and she can become the first woman to win the 30km event twice at the Olympic Winter Games.
  • Charlotte KALLA (SWE) can become the first Swedish woman to win four medals at a single Winter Games. Two Swedish men have achieved this feat, Sixten JERNBERG (SWE) won four medals in cross country in 1956, as did Gunde SVAN (SWE) in 1984.
