A dream come true for Iivo Niskanen (FIN) - UPDATED
Iivo Niskanen (FIN) won in dominant fashion today's 15 km classic at the FIS U23 World Championships in Val di Fiemme.
In heavy snowfall Niskanen stopped the clock in the time of 38:26.6. U23 Sprint World Champion Sergey Ustiugov showed great distance shape and took silver medal as he lost on Niskanen +17.4 sec. Mathias Rundgreen of Norway powered to bronze +27.6 back.
Iivo Niskanen (FIN):
It’s an unbelievable day, I kept a good speed and the last kilometres were really hard because I knew that Ustiugov was right behind me. It’s hard to beat a big champion like him and I tried to do my best to do it.
Sergei Ustiogov (RUS)
In the first lap the objective was just to start as quick as possible. Then I was trying to constantly increase the speed. I am not satisfied with the final result, but the result is where my level was today. I tried the best I could in this race. The last meters were quite hard for me but I still really tried hard anyway. Unfortunately I am not that satisfied with the ski preparation. The glide was not so good today. The steepest uphill was very hard but in general I guess I am quite satisfied.
Mathias Rundgreen (NOR)
It was good. I tried to control my speed from the start and get a good result today. I started to push really hard in the last part of the race because I saw the Finn on my tail and I tried to maintain a high speed to keep him behind me.
