The Ski Tour Canada got off to a great start today in Gatineau, Canada with the 1.7 km free technique sprints. Maiken Caspersen Falla of Norway continued her impressive sprint season and extended her lead as World Cup overall sprint leader with her victory today.  It was her 7th win of the season.  Stina Nilsson of Sweden tried her best to keep the battle close for the sprint globe with a second place finish +0.73.  The USA' s Jessie Diggins also continued her best season ever with another podium third position +0.87.

Falla leads the sprint World Cup overall with 630 points ahead of Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg (NOR) with 563 points and Nilsson in third with 552 points

Russia's Sergey Ustiugov recorded his first sprint victory since Nove Mesto, CZE in January 2014 ahead of Richard Jouve of France +0.08 in second and Simi Hamilton (USA) +0.09.  It was the second podium this season for both Jouve (Plancia) and Hamilton (Toblach) and their third career sprint podiums.  The men's final had all 6 athletes in a photo finish.  First place to fourth were separated by just 0.13 seconds, and 5th and 6th place were 0.71 and 0.72 also a photo finish.

Federico Pellegrino of Italy still leads the men's World Cup sprint standings with 493 points with Peter Northug Jr (NOR) in second with 402 points.  Finn Hagen Krogh (NOR), last year's sprint overall winner is in third with 372 points.  There are only 100 points remaining with two sprints left this season.  Since the sprints remaining are part of the Ski Tour Canada they are only worth 50 points each.  The sprint globes for both ladies and men can be decided in Quebec City just a couple of days from now on Friday.
