Future star of FIS World Cup - Roman Schaad (SUI)
Interview by nordic-online.ch
In our conversation with Roman Schaad, and his brother Fabian we learn more about these two cross-country talents from Unteriberg, Switzerland. Both brothers recently moved to Davos where they train and study with the Nordic Centre which supports student-athletes as they pursue their athletic goals. The move appears to be already paying off.
nordic-online.ch: That was a bang, 10th place at your first World Cup race ever - a huge surprise for all, was it for you?
Roman Schaad: My goal was just to run in the Top 30. I was very nervous the whole week.
Fabian Schaad: We already knew that Roman is good. One week ago in the prologue in Ulrichen / Goms at the Continental Cup he left behind Russian sprinters Kriukov (sprint world champion) and Petukhov.
nordic-online.ch: What happened after the competition and how you have spent the day today (Monday)?
Roman Schaad: Today was quiet again and I had no training. Although I still wanted to go for an easy run. I have written many emails and thanked all for the congratulations.
Yesterday after the competition we were together with our Fan Club, more than 20 people in our apartment! ... in the evening I was very tired.
nordic-online.ch: Were some special congratulations?
Roman Schaad: I am pleased to welcome all, but also from slalom skier Wendy Holdener - my school mate from Unteriberg also sent congratulations! In addition, there were also some new members in the fan club!
nordic-online.ch: How is your knee? You had a torn ligament in the spring of 2013?
Roman Schaad : The entire rehab has indeed gone very well run (see also nordic-online.ch - Contribution from 8/27/2013!) - the injury has healed well and I took my time. I never had pain or problems since getting back on cross-country skis. On Tuesday Iwill drive to the doctor in St. Gallen to have a final check up.
nordic-online.ch: What has changed with you training since you moved to Davos
Roman Schaad: The daily amount has increased. Being supervised by Trai Ningss, Hitsch Flury and Bärti Manhart has been very valuable!
Fabian Schaad: For me it is the targeted strength training. From this I can benefit a lot. Otherwise, the summer and cross-country training is not much different for me.
nordic-online.ch: When is your next competition?
Roman Schaad: We travel next weekend with our colleagues to FIS continenal / Alpine Cup Gressoney St. Jean to the Valle d'Aosta (ITA). After the competitions then to Campra. I want to achieve further progress in the distance races.
nordic-online.ch: Who is the better cook in your household?
Roman Schaad: Fabian is learning slowly (laughs), but we do miss "mom's cooking". She is a very good cook.
nordic-online.ch: Roman and Fabian, Thanks for talking - Stay healthy and good luck continues!
