Jean-Marc Gaillard takes over lead in Tour de Barents. UPDATED

Jean Marc Gaillard (FRA) won second stage of Tour de Barents in Inari, Finland.

After the opening stage in Norway Tour de Barents moved to Inari Finland for the second stage. 15 km Mass Start Free was on the schedule on Thursday 8 April, 2011.

7 men were fighting for victory till the last kilometer. French Jean-Marc Gaillard hit hard on the end of most hard uphill and went to victory. “I took some more speed and at the top, I noticed that I’m alone.”, explained winner.  He also prasied his skis: “Before final downhill I knew I could keep first place, since I had noticed that my skis are gliding in a perfect way.”

Gaillard won the second stage ahead of local hero Matti Heikkinen and beat the Finnish World Champion by 10 seconds. Heikkinen, Bajcicak (SVK) and Bauer (CZE) fought for podium in the finish stretch. Heikkinen edged out Bajcicak by +0.02 sec to third place. Lukas Bauer finished fourth.

Jean Marc Gaillard won 24 bonus seconds in the second stage and took over current lead in Tour de Barents 2011. Maurice Manificat (FRA) is in second place +17.4 sec behind. Matti Heikkinen (FIN) is third losing +20.3 sec.
