Stage five of the FIS Tour de Ski produced great challenges to both Overall Tour leaders. Norway's Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg, in the red bib fought from the beginning against her teammate Therese Johaug to stay in the bib for another day.  In the end Oestberg lost +9.9 seconds at the finish line to Johaug and with bonus seconds now only leads Johaug by 12.2 seconds.  Johaug won the 10 km classic mass start competition in 26:37.6 seconds.  Back on the podium again in third place was Heidi Weng, also of Norway +19.7 second back.  Weng also remains in 3rd place in the overall Tour standings +2:33.1 behind Oestberg. Two Finns Anne Kylloenen (+4:44.4) and Kerttu Niskanen (+5:14.5) round out the top 5 in the overall standings.

In the men's competition it was the first distance World Cup podium this season without a Norwegian athlete represented.  Norway's Niklas Dyrhaug did what he could on the final 100 meters but the U23 overall standings leader Francesco De Fabiani of Italy held him off for the final step on the podium.  Kazakhstan's Alexey Poltoranin won the men's 15 km classic competition in a photo finish ahead of Switzerland's Dario Cologna by just +0.1.  De Fabiani was just +0.6 back.

Overall Tour leader Martin Johnsrud Sundby (NOR) for the first time this season showed some weakness finishing in 23rd and +56.4 seconds off of Poltoranin.  However he still remains +47.2 ahead of his teammate Petter Northug Jr. Northug was 9th on the day +10.0 off the pace and Russia's Sergey Ustiugov was 10th just 0.9 behind Northug. Both remain second and third in the overall standings.

The Tour now travels to Toblach, Italy for stage 6 on Friday 8th January.  The athletes will get a one day rest before competition resumes with 5/10 km interval start free technique competitions.

Therese Johaug, NOR
It was really tough race. Ingvild had a grate competition. She has been in a great shape and I knew I had attack on the last hill. I am happy to gain some seconds. It will be a tough fight with her all the way to the top of Alpe Cermis.

Ingvild Flugstad Östberg, NOR
I had maybe my best 10 km classic ever. To finish only 10 seconds behind Therese in a classic technique competition is incredible. I felt strong through the whole day. We worked together at the beginning. At the end I had to fight as hard as I could to stay close to Therese.

Heidi Weng, NOR
I liked it today. I had very good experience from the last year. I had a very good race back then and also today. I like the track and especially the hard climbs. In the 3rd lap I felt tired. Therese and Ingvild went for the bonus sprint but I did not. I tried to stay focused and go as fast as possible.

Alexey Poltoranin, KAZ
I had a grate race. I am happy, I am the first guy this winter to beat Martin in a distance race. I hope for top 10 in Toblach and I will fight for the 3rd place in the Tour de Ski.

Dario Cologna, SUI
It was a hard race but I had fun to compete. I am very happy with the 2nd place today. There was a great atmosphere along the course. I hope I can fight for the podium in the next stages. I will see how it works for the overall Tour de Ski standing.

Francesco Defabiani, ITA
It was a great race. I'm very satisfied with my performance. In the past I was twice first on the top of the last uphill and then I lost some positions and in the finish I was off the podium. Today I am very satisfied. I gained one or two positions after the last downhill. It was hard conditions out there. The snow was not compact. It was difficult to double pole and work with the arms. It was challenging to have a good grip.

Martin Johnsrud Sundby, NOR
I had a terrible day. I lost many seconds. I have to look forward to the next day and try to have a better day on the next stage.
