Johaug wins big in Ruka 10 km classic - UPDATED
Norway's Therese Johaug - last year's overall FIS World Cup champion - had a huge win today in the 10 km classic in Ruka, Finland.
In the first distance competition of the year Johaug crushed the field with a 42 second gap to second place finisher Marit Bjoergen of Norway. In third just behind Bjoergen was Sweden's Charlotte Kalla. Bjoergen and Kalla were close at all the timing splits during the competition and were the only two athletes able to be under one minute back from Johaug.
Sweden's Sofia Henriksson was the top U23 female in 12th place overall +1:36.3 behind Johaug and will now wear the Helvetia U23 bib in the next World Cup competition.
Therese Johaug (NOR)
I had a perfect race today. I felt from the beginning that I was in a good shape and I could go really fast. I am really happy to see that the work I did during the summer with the classical technique has paid off.
Marit Bjørgen (NOR)
I knew after 4 km that Therese was 25 seconds ahead and I understood I would be fighting for the second place. I thought it was between me and Justyna. I was pushing as much as I could to take second place.
Charlotte Kalla (SWE)
I am very satisfied with the third place. I felt very good last week at the national opening and I could keep the good shape to Ruka. In the summer I was trying to keep the good momentum of my classical technique. I tried to do my very best today.
