Matti Heikkinen leads Finnish squad in Tour de Barents

World Champion from 15 km Classic Matti Heikkinen leads the Finnish team at the second edition of Tour de Barents, which kicks off tomorrow in Tana, Norway.

“I decided during last spring that if everything goes as planned, I would take part in Tour De Barents,” said Heikkinen. Second edition of the four-stage competition starts in Norway with a 10 km Classic Ladies and 15 km Classic Men.

Then the Tour moves to Finland for remaining three stages in Inari and Rovaniemi. Many top athletes both from men's and ladies' World class are going to take part in the last multi-stage event of the season.

Heikkinen is considered to be one of the biggest candidates for overall Tour de Barents vicrtory. “In this fiedl, there are approximately 30 skiers, whose goal is to win this Tour. Season has been long, but I will do my best,” quoted Heikkinen. He said his tactic would be ski every race better and better and did not count himself the biggest favorite.

Tour De Barents starts in Tana, Norway on 6 Aprill with classical races and continues the following day in Inari with free technique mass start competitions. After Inari tour moves to Rovaniemi, where two final stages will be held. Third stage, classical sprint, is to take place on Saturday 9 April. Final stage of Tour de Barents is Ounasvaara Climb (with HD 104 m) on Sunday 10 April.
