Olsson wins Swedish male athlete of the year
Johan Olsson's gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2015 FIS World Ski Championships was enough to knock out Zlatan Ibrahimovic and become "best male athlete in 2015". Another great award to a great skier at the Sports Gala in Stockholm on Monday evening.
"I want to thank those who have been close to me throughout my career," said a happy Johan, who first thanked his wife Anna, herself an Olympic champion skier. Additionally, he thanked his parents who saw to it that he continued after his first ski competition in Ytterhogdal 25 years ago when he finish last place.
National coach Rikard Grip was nominated in the category "Leader of the Year", but did not win this time. Charlotte Kalla was nominated in the category "Performance of the Year" for her World Championship gold in the 10 km freestyle. But both times it was the U21 national team's European Championship in football that took home the prize.
In the category for "Best Female Athlete" Kalla was one of the four nominees. She was also left among the last two, but the award finally went to double the World Cup victories in swimming, by 22-year-old Sarah Sjöström. That was an expected choice.
