Petra Majdic and Jean-Marc Gaillard won Tour de Barents
Slovenian Petra Majdic and Frenchman Jean-Marc Gaillard won second edition of Tour de Barents, which ended today in Rovaniemi, Finland.
Fight for victory on the men's side in Tour De Barents 2011 was extremely tight between French skiers Maurice Manificat and Jean-Marc Gaillard. Gaillard took victory only with 0,2 second margin. “One meter before finish I knew I would win. Maurice was probably stronger than me, but maybe experience gave me this victory,” commented Gaillard. Matti Heikkinen started fast with the yellow bib to the final stage, but ended on third place. “Matti started really fast and I had to wait for Maurice that we could catch Matti together”, explained Gaillard.
Petra Majdic unbeatable
It was no surprise that Petra Majdic won second edition of Tour De Barents, which marked an end to her successful career. Majdic enjoyed the Ounasvaara Climb challenge. “ The course was great and in a very good shape. The climb was better than final climb in Tour De Ski, because here you can ski it up,” smiled Majdic and praised organizers. “It was great to travel on the bus with other athletes on this tour where everything was organized for skiers best.” Finnish Kerttu Niskanen secured second place ahead of compatriot Krista Lähteenmäki. Slovakian Alena Prochazkova finished fourth.
Niskanen and Agreiter celebrate among juniors
Iivo Niskanen dominated K-Citymarket Junior Tour. He was fastest also on final stage. Perttu Hyvärinen took second place in overall standings before Norwegian Daniel Carloe Skjönsfjell. On junior ladies' side Italian Depora Agreiter showed her free technique skills by climbing to the lead on the first lap and winning the overall tour. Second place was a tight fight on the stadium. Emilie Kristoffersen (NOR) took the second place before Finn Marjaana Pitkänen.
Majdic says goodbye
After the competition spectators saw memorable moment when all skiers went together for a lap of honour around the stadium. It was meant both to thank the audience but also respect the career of Petra Majdic, Pirjo Muranen and Jaak Mae, who end their career after Tour De Barents. “In Falun I was just so happy. In this round together I felt more emotional, now it is really over”, explained Majdic who was surprised for skiers and organizers great act.
