Petukhov and Visnar dominate sprint qualifier in Düsseldorf
Long awaited sprint weekend in Düsseldorf kicked off today at 10:15 with a qualifier ladies and men.
56 ladies were at the start of the qualification this morning. Vesna Fabjan of Slovenia showed her sprint might and qualified for the quarterfinals with the best time. Sweden's Hanna Falk who broke through into the company of elite sprinters last year started her road to defend the title with the second place in the qualifier. Her team mate Magdalena Pajala made it through with third best time. Chandra Crawford of Canada seems to have found momentum and after tame performance in Kuusamo and qualified as fourth.
Local hero Nicole Fessel who was the first lady in the qualification proved to have decent sprint skills and is in the quarterfinals in 12th best time. Slovenian sprint specialist Petra Majdic is stronger in classic but finished in 20th fastest time and is through.
On the men's side Alexei Petukhov showed that the course in Düsseldorf suits him perfectly and dominated the men's qualifier. Sprint classic winner from last Friday in Kuusamo, Norway's John Kristian Dahl lost on Petukhov +2.87 sec and qualified second. Andy Newell of USA who finished 6th in the Classis sprint in Kuusamo is in the quarterfinals with third best time. German head coach Jochen Behle cannot be satisfied with the men sprinters as none of the DSV squad made it from the qualifier. Tim Tscharnke was the best German on 43rd spot.
