Record setting day for Bjoergen and Northug as new World Champions 2015

Marit Bjoergen and Petter Northug Jr, both of Norway have won the first FIS Nordic World Championship medals of Falun 2015.  For Bjoergen she is now the all-time winningest athlete with 30 medals at either the World Championships (WSC) or Olympics (OWG) and is now one gold medal behind Russia's Elena Välbe with 13 total gold medals.  Bjoergen is now also the first athlete to win 3 consecutive gold medals in the same event at the WSC (2011, 2013, 2015).  

Bjoergen won today's sprint event in a time of 3:26.63.  In the silver medal position was Sweden's Stina Nilsson +0.42, and with the bronze was the Olympic 2014 sprint champion Maiken Caspersen Falla of Norway +0.99.   

For Northug he has now won all competition events at the World Championships or Olympics.  Northug has 12 gold medals now.  His previous wins came in the in Relay (4), in 50km (3), 30km skiathlon (2), in 15km (1), Team Sprint (1) and now gold in the individual sprint.

The men's sprint finish had the top 5 separated by just 0.67 seconds with Alex Harvey of Canada +0.05 behind Northug for the silver medal.  Harvey now has one medal in the last three WSC (gold 2011, bronze 2013, silver 2015).  Like the ladies' sprint, the bronze medal went the Olympic 2014 sprint champion Ola Vigen Hattestad +0.35.
