In July 2010, Maria Rydqvist (29) became mother. A few months later the triple Swedish champion came back stronger than ever and finished sixth in the skiathlon at the World Championships in Oslo 2011.

Now it's time again for Maria Rydqvist. "I'm expecting a baby and will not participate in either the World Cup or the World Championships this winter, but still I am aiming for the Olympics in Sochi in 2014," Maria Rydqvist says.

She enjoys life at home in Älvdalen along with her partner Bengt Leandersson and daughter Wilda, 2 years and the family is expected to grow.
"It is of course just fine, even if it means that I will not compete at the same high level in winter, says Maria, who is expected to become a mother in May and instead of competing in major competitions she is going to train and participate in local competitions.

"During the off-season I've been training as usual, but must adapt because of body changes. Now I choose to turn down both the pace and amount. There's no reason to push myself unnecessarily when my belly is growing and great things are happening," Maria Rydqvist explains.

The Cross-Country Team management has known about Maria Rydqvist's pregnancy a time. On Monday evening she informed his team mates an the camp start in Bruksvallarna. "We wish Maria the best of luck! Naturally, we hope that everything goes well and that she can come back and be with us again for the Olympics in Sochi and then at the World Championshps in Falun in 2015," the head coach Lars Öberg and ladies coach Rikard Grip say.

And Maria is quite clear about what she wants. "I'm very happy to combine skiing with being a mom. Of course, one must be humble for what could happen on the road, but my ambition has certainly not been smaller than trying to qualify for the Olympics in Sochi next winter," she concludes.
