Maxim Vylegzhanin of Russia made his move with one lap to go and held it all the way to the finish to win the 15 km classic mass start competition in Szklarska Poreba, Poland.  He was joined on the podium by his teammate Evgeniy Belov who took second +2.2 back.  This result qualified Belov for the Sochi games.  In third was pre-competition favourite Alexey Poltoranin of Kazakhstan who was just out lunged by Belov at the finish line to finish +2.3 back from Vylegzhanin's winning time of 35:39.0.

Three countries dominated the top ten with 3 Canadians (Harvey 4th, Kershaw 8th, Babikov 9th), 3 Russians (Vylegzhanin 1st, Belov 2nd, Volzhentsev 7th) and 3 Germans (Dotlzer 5th, Angerer 6th, Filbrich 10th).  For Tobias Angerer his 6th place result also qualified him for Sochi.

Alexey Poltoranin (KAZ)
I am happy with today’s result. Third place is nice but of course I hoped for victory. I fought to the finish with Evgeniy (Belov) but he was more powerful. I recovered well from yesterday’s sprint. Today’s result gives me good energy for the final preparation phase before the Games.

It’s been a great day for me. Everything worked just perfect. I had fast skis, my shape was very good. It’s my first podium of the season and I am excited it happened today. I just earned my ticket for Sochi.

Maxim Vylegzhanin (RUS)
I planned to go away from the pack in the second last lap. I felt good and confident I could make it.
