Nordic Combined: double victory for Magnus Moan
The Nordic Combined season started with an exciting weekend featuring an individual Gundersen competition and a penalty race in Lillehammer (NOR) on 24-25th November. In both events, Norwegian local hero Magnus Moan made the best of it: In an exciting Cross-Country race he finished one second ahead of Jason Lamy Chappuis (FRA) and third-ranked Bernhard Gruber (AUT). The day after, he shared the podium with teammate Haavard Klemetsen and Germany's Eric Frenzel.
On the jumping hills, Klemetsen reigned supreme by winning the normal and large hill jumping parts on both competition days.
The start of the Cross-Country part in Sunday’s penalty race turned out to be even more exciting than expected after a false start caused by “Berni” Gruber. At the second start attempt, everything went well and the field was off to an amazing race which was decided by a great show of teamwork. The Norwegians Joergen Graabak and Truls Soestehagen Johansen did a lot of leg work for Magnus Moan who completed his two penalty laps in the first lap. Mario Stecher tried to pull the unlucky Berni Gruber forward, but in the end Magnus Moan proved too strong and won by a margin of 5 seconds.
Double-winner Moan was over the moon: "Second day and second victory! It was incredible fun to ski and the team spirit, how the guys helped me to catch up with the leader group, was just amazing. So BIG thanks to my teammates. I wouldn't be standing up here without them!" Haavard Klemetsen agreed: "It's fantastic to have a double home victory! I also want to thank the whole team which did an amazing job for me in the cross-country race."
The next competitions will take place on 1st and 2nd December in Kuusamo where a team sprint and an individual Gundersen competition will be on schedule for Nordic Combined.
