Children from 49 countries participate in Youth Camp

The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Schladming are not only an event for the elite alpine athletes but also for the children. To provide children with a true snow experience, the programme titled “Schladming International Youth Camp” has selected 85 children from 49 nations to participate in two camps during the course of the two weeks of the championships.

FIS President Gian Franco Kasper remarked: “FIS is delighted that 85 children from 49 nations have followed the invitation by the Austrian Ski Association to participate in the International Youth Camp. The idea to not only provide a training and educational camp, but also to enable them to see the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Schladming 2013 from a behind the scenes perspective that will provide them with strong motivation for their own careers.”

On 6th February, FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis greeted the participants of the first camp in Schladming and provided a presentation about FIS, its role, mission and the Bring Children to the Snow Campaign. The participants then took the opportunity of putting a range of direct questions to the Secretary General.

In the next days, each of the two camps will host a variety of activities for the children. Some of the highlights include: Welcome party witha full Austrian experience by being transported to the venue by horse and sleigh; a chance to watch the men’s super-G, ladies’ super combined, men’s downhill, men’s giant slalom and ladies slalom; the opportunity to try different forms of snow sport including telemarking and mono-skiing; free skiing around the mountain and finally a farewell party which will be organised at the end of both camps.
