Full action in FIS World Cups worldwide

The past week has seen FIS World Cup competitions take place in five FIS Olympic disciplines on three continents. Surprise winners, comeback stars and well-known faces all featured on the podium.

Cross-Country: Norwegian weekend in La Clusaz

In the FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann, Marit Bjoergen (NOR) returned to the tracks with a victory in La Clusaz (FRA). Despite missing four World Cup weekends and the Tour de Ski, she won the ladies’ mass start in her comeback race and was also part of the victorious Norwegian ladies’ team in the relay on Sunday. On the men’s side, Kazakhstan's 25-year-old Alexey Poltoranin claimed already his second season victory, along with two Tour de Ski stage wins, and continues to establish himself among the top males in the world.

Ski Jumping: Jan Matura sensational in Japan

32-year-old Jan Matura of the Czech Republic celebrated his first two FIS Ski Jumping World Cup victories in Sapporo (JPN) on 19th and 20th January. In difficult weather conditions, the veteran finally landed on top after 11 seasons on the World Cup tour.

Nordic Combined: Eric Frenzel victorious twice

Germany's Eric Frenzel won both of the two FIS Nordic Combined Individual Gundersen competitions staged in Seefeld (AUT) on 19th-20th January. With his 474 points, Frenzel is now ranked third in the overall World Cup standings, rapidly approaching the two season’s dominators, Jason Lamy-Chappuis of France (1st with 527 points) and Magnus Moan (NOR, 508).

Alpine Skiing: A victorious day for Germany; Lindsey Vonn celebrates comeback

20th January was a day for the German Alpine team as Felix Neureuther won the slalom in Wengen (SUI), exactly 40 years after his father Christian had done so, while Viktoria Rebensburg took victory in the super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo (ITA).

On Super Saturday, with two FIS Ski World Cup classic downhill races, comeback star Lindsey Vonn clinched victory in Cortina, whilst on the Lauberhorn, Christof Innerhofer claimed already the 4th victory of the season for the strong Italian speed team.

The men’s super-combined on 18th January was won by the French super talent Alexis Pinturault (FRA) in front of “Mr Wengen” Ivica Kostelic (CRO) and Switzerland’s Carlo Janka who scored the long-awaited first season podium for the struggling Swiss men’s team.

Freestyle Skiing: China storms Lake Placid in aerials, Canadians victorious in moguls

On 18th and 19th January, it was a huge weekend for China at the legendary Lake Placid (USA) stop on the FIS Freestyle World Cup aerials tour, with seven podiums of which four were wins divided amongst the nation's men and ladies over the two days.

On the ladies' side, Mengtao Xu won her third straight competition whilst in the men's competition; Zongyang Jia claimed his second win. In the team event on 19th January, the Chinese team claimed both the men's and ladies' competitions.

On Whiteface Mountain, last season’s mogul dominators Hannah Kearney (USA) and Canadian counterpart on the men's side, Mikael Kingsbury again stood at the top of the FIS Freestyle World Cup moguls podium.
