Snowboard Calendar secures quality standard

Snowboard Calendar secures quality standard

The 2012/13 FIS Snowboard World Cup season, which successfully started at the end of August with a high-class halfpipe competition in Cardrona (NLZ), will feature a total of 18 sites hosting eleven parallel events, nine snowboard cross competitions, one big air contest, five halfpipe and four slopestyle events.

With a total of 30 competitions confirmed for this winter, mainly focusing on the Olympic events, the FIS Snowboard World Cup is on track to achieve its goal of “quality over quantity” through providing high-level events.

Following successful work by FIS and its member National Associations as well as the Organisers to harmonise the freestyle snowboarding calendar and allow more riders to qualify for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, the first ever co-sanctioned World Cup competitions (Park City and Copper) counting for both the FIS World Cup and the World Snowboard Tour, will take place in December 2012 and January 2013.

In addition, the quality standard has also been improved from a media perspective. An analysis conducted by rights holder Infront Sports & Media showed that the total exposure and thus the interest in the worldwide series has increased significantly. Chances are good that numbers will continue to rise as the TV standard for this winter will be HD without exception.

Thanks to great efforts by the United States Ski and Snowboard Association, events in the USA will be broadcast live for the first time. In addition, competitions shared with Freestyle Skiing have great potential to improve the total TV exposure even further.
Overall, the FIS Snowboard World Cup is heading in a positive direction. The Organisers of the Cardrona event in New Zealand underlined their continued desire to host a massive season opener event. The 2014 season would thus kick off down under with Snowboard halfpipe, slopestyle and cross competitions combined with Freestyle halfpipe and slopestyle skiing events.
