10th anniversary of FIS Nordic Opening
After the FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann kicked off in Sjusoen (NOR) last weekend, the entire Nordic ski family is now moving to Ruka, Kuusamo (FIN) where the 10th anniversary of the FIS Nordic Opening is set to take place this weekend.
Unlike most other parts of Europe, Ruka boasts a reasonable snow cover and temperatures below freezing. Approximately 5km of Cross-Country track is set to be ready when the official program commences on Thursday. The jumping hill, too, is ready for training.
"A week ago few people believed that we could finalize the track for the Nordic Opening. Two weeks ago no-one thought it to be possible," commented Jukka Tahkola, local chief of competition for Cross-Country Skiing. "It was definitely a close call this year due to the weather. Luckily the temperatures turned cold last week and enabled us complete all the preparations," added relieved Seppo Linjakumpu, Secretary General of Nordic Opening.
Most of the teams, including almost 400 competitors from 26 countries, arrived in Kuusamo earlier this week. The weather forecast for the weekend calls for temperatures on both sides of freezing with clear, sunny skies.
The competition program will see the Cross-Country Skiers tackle the challenge of the 2nd edition of the Ruka Triple, a three-day multi multi-stage event staged as a so-called mini-Tour. In Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping, two competitions for each discipline are on the schedule.
