5 days to go: GAP 2011
There are now just 5 days until the official opening of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 presented by Audi in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER). The opening ceremony will take place at the Olympic ski stadium at the out-run of the ski jump and will be broadcast live on German and Austrian television. Whilst FIS President Gian Franco Kasper will officially open the championships accompanied by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President of the German Ski Association Alfons Hörmann, the opening ceremony promises to deliver many a highlight. Among them, the official World Championship song will be performed by Austrian ski star Elisabeth Görgl together with her duet partner Christian Geisler. The song is entitled „You're the Hero (between Heaven and Hell)".
At the Kandahar racing venue, the preparation work on the track has been finished and the slope is ready for racing from start to finish. The Kandahar will be the setting for downhill, super-G, giant slalom competitions as well as the nations' team event. While the men are looking forward to the (in)famous „free fall", the ladies will be starting further up compared to the World Cup Finals last spring. A steep pitch with a length of 250m consisting of two curves and a jump over the tunnel of the „Tröglhang" will add excitement to the ladies' downhill right from the start.
At the Gudiberg slalom venue, two changes were announced last week. The ladies' start has been moved higher up to the same position as the men's. Moreover, tickets for the two slaloms will be newly available for 15'000 fans, as an additional 5'000 standing places in the Ski Jumping stadium were approved by the city. Currently there are 47'000 requests for the ladies slalom on 19th February whilst demand for tickets to the men's slalom on the final Sunday numbers 40'000.
The Main Media Center was handed over to GAP 2011 Head of Media Gerd Rubenbauer and Venue Manager Stefan Red on 29th January 2011. The entire Organizational Center with Press Center, Press Conference Hall, Accreditation Office and Race Office was officially opened for business on Tuesday 1st February.
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships also mark the 75 year anniversary of the first Olympic Winter Games that included Alpine Skiing competitions which significantly took place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from 6th to 16th February 1936. These Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen showed fascination for sports but also served as a cover for a brutal dictatorship. An exhibition called "The other side of the medal" in the Kurhaus in the World Championships Park in the center of Garmisch-Partenkirchen during the 2011 event examines the two sides of this historical event.
