Sochi 2014: Progress for Freestyle, Snowboard
Following the decision of the International Olympic Committee to include both Freestyle Ski and Snowboard slopestyle on the program of the Olympic Winter Games, a group of FIS professionals led by Joseph Fitzgerald, FIS Freestyle Coordinator and Roby Moresi, FIS Assistant Snowboard Race Director, visited Rosa Khutor last week. Hosted by a team from the Sochi 2014 organizing committee led by Gennady Belousov, Sport Manager Freestyle Skiing, and Alexander Adamyants, Sport Manager Snowboarding, along with representatives of the Russian Freestyle Federation and the Russia Alpine Ski and Snowboard Federation (RASSF) as well as of the Rosa Khutor Ski Resort, the delegation inspected the status of preparations and development work at the Sochi 2014 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard venue.
"We're very pleased about what we saw. It is a massive development project but everyone is being very cooperative and the work is progressing well. We confirmed the area foreseen for the slopestyle course and are working on the development of it. There are great possibilities to build a great slopestyle course. There is, of course, still some work to do but all is proceeding in the right direction. The preliminary line design will already be finished in a couple of weeks," commented Roby Moresi.
There will be just two finish areas for all 20 medal events to be held in Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding at the Sochi 2014 Games, the combined Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding venue at Rosa Khutor features the so-called "HAM" finish area for the halfpipe, aerials and moguls events (8 Olympic medal competitions) whilst the "PSX" finish area serves the parallel, slopestyle and cross events (12 Olympic medal competitions in 2014). A new start area for the newly-added snowboard parallel slalom was also established and will be integrated into the design of the parallel course, which ends in the same finish area as the cross and slope events.
"Working together with the Sochi 2014 organizers and the Rosa Khutor resort, we have been able to design an excellent venue that is even more balanced that the one at Cypress Mountain in Vancouver in terms of taking into account the varying needs of each Olympic event now on the program. The course profiles are currently being finalized and we are very pleased especially with the minimal amount of transition between the events. For example, the slopestyle and cross events will have separate starts and their own lines, but at the end they will share parts of the same course including the last 200 metres with the final two jump features arriving into one common finish area," stated Joe Fitzgerald and added: "The FIS European Cup events in February and March 2012 will offer a great first opportunity to test the new courses and overall venue."
