Snowboard cross World Cup season to start
This week will see a big LG Snowboard FIS World Cup weekend split across North America and Europe. While the American ski resort of Telluride, USA, will stage a long weekend with three competitions, the halfpipe contests in Ruka (FIN) will mark the return of Finland on the World Cup map after a hiatus of ten years. In Telluride, the world's best snowboard cross riders will launch their battle for the World Cup globe on 16th December and will also compete in the season's only SBX team event the day thereafter. A parallel giant slalom will conclude the competition weekend in Colorado.
Whilst US Snowboarding is hoping for a strong showing on home turf and a first win in Telluride for its strong team, the Europeans are favored in the parallel giant slalom. Meanwhile in Finland the local riders? are still looking for their first home win. At the halfpipe in Ruka, qualifiers are scheduled for Friday while Saturday will bring the semi-finals and the night finals at 4 PM local time.
For Ruka it is the third time after 2001 and 2002 hosting the World Cup as the only Finnish Organizer so far. In 2002, three Finnish riders made it on the podium as Heidi Kurkinen and Antti Autti finished as runner-ups and Miikka Hast claimed third.
