Bardal wins overall title

Planica (SLO) hosted the traditional and always much anticipated Finals of the Bauhaus FIS Ski Jumping World Cup season with individual and team ski flying competitions last weekend. Unfortunately the weather conditions did not match the great atmosphere and Martin Koch won the season's final competition in Planica after one round only. The Austrian ski flying specialist, won clearly ahead of Swiss Simon Ammann, for whom the season thus had a positive ending whilst third place went to Friday's winner, Ski Flying world champion Robert Kranjec of Slovenia who also won the Ski Flying World Cup ahead of Koch.

The fight for the overall World Cup was as good as over already before the final event. Anders Bardal (NOR) only needed one point to clinch the globe. His 23rd place was enough for the overall victory as the main challenger Gregor Schlierenzauer didn't win, which was his only chance. Thanks to incredibly consistent results this season - a dozen podiums including three wins - Bardal's overall title was well-deserved. Individually, Andreas Kofler was the best at the beginning of the season; Gregor Schlierenzauer was the best mid-season whilst towards the end Daiki Ito achieved the best results. But Anders Bardal was the most consistent at a high level over the entire season. It was the third time after Vegard Opaas 1987 and Espen Bredesen 1994 that a Norwegian claimed the overall World Cup title.

The season's final team competition on Saturday reflected the season with respect to the different nations' levels of strength. Austria won clearly ahead of Norway, Germany and Slovenia - which is also the final ranking in the Nation's Cup.

A long season is now over. The next competition will take place on 20th July when the first Summer Grand Prix is held in Szczyrk (POL).
