FIS Grand Prix 2011 begins with Poland Tour
The 2011 edition of the FIS Grand Prix in Ski Jumping will get underway at the weekend. This year, the summer series is characterized by the re-launch of the Poland Tour. Wisla, the home town of the Polish superstar Adam Malysz, will host the opening on Sunday, 17th July. Malysz won there, on the hill carrying his name, last year but this time around he will no longer be competing following his retirement at the end of last season. However, the home crowds can look forward to the performances of Kamil Stoch and the other young guns, who are likely to fight for the victory.
After the competition in Wisla, which witnessed 15‘000 fans at the modern facility last summer, the teams will travel to Szczyrk, located just 20 km away, where the second competition will take place on 20th July. The Poland Tour will conclude in Zakopane in the High Tatra region on 22nd and 23rd July, with the team competition held on Saturday and the individual event on Sunday.
The Poland Tour at the very venues of Wisla, Sczcyrk and Zakopane already took place in the 1980s under the name of the Beskidy Cup. At that time the series was carried out in the winter.
A total of 14 National Ski Associations have entered to compete, including all leading Ski Jumping nations. Austria will boast its main stars including Thomas Morgenstern, Gregor Schlierenzauer, Wolfgang Loitzl and Martin Koch, while Germany will come with Martin Schmitt and Norway will feature Tom Hilde and Anders Bardal.
The international Ski Jumping season already started with the first Continental Cup events for the men in Kranj, Slovenia and Stams, Austria in the past ten days. In the four competitions so far, Slovenia has proven unbeatable with three different athletes winning. The men's overall COC rankings are currently led by Peter Prevc with 330 points followed by Jure Sinkovec with 216 points.
