Rydzek wins overall Nordic Combined SGP

Before this year's series, Christoph Bieler (AUT) was the only athlete so far who has been able to defend the overall victory in the FIS Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix. The Austrian won the summer series in 2005 and 2006 and in 2011, the 33-year-old also played an important role in the overall ranking, but narrowly missed the podium. In the end, Johannes Rydzek (GER) became the second athlete to defend his title from 2010. The 19-year-old German captured the first place overall with a victory in front of his home town crowd in Oberstdorf.

"It's awesome to win here in front of my fans. I want to thank everybody for their support," Rydzek said. Concerning the idea to stage the roller skiing race over the famous Ski Jumping stadium in Oberstdorf, Rydzek said: "At first I was a bit skeptical about racing over the mats. But it worked great. I had goose bumps every time I skied through the stadium." After passing his high school exams, the youngster in the German team can now start the real preparation for the winter.

The Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix 2011 consisted of five competitions; the two competitions in Oberwiesenthal at the beginning and in Oberstdorf at the end were both won by Rydzek and Eric Frenzel. It was only in Liberec where no German athlete made it on the podium. The winner in the Czech Republic was Christoph Bieler who prevailed in front of teammate Bernhard Gruber and Magnus Krog from Norway. Other notable highlights of the summer series were the Ski Jumping performances of Bjoern Kircheisen (GER) and the ski roller times of Seppi Hurscher (SUI). The winter season may be somewhat different in terms of results, but during the Summer Grand Prix, Nordic Combined delivered a great commercial for itself.
