Southern COC series in Alpine Skiing finish The FIS Continental Cup series in Alpine Skiing in the Southern hemisphere have now concluded the 2011 racing seasons. Following the cancellation of the planned finals in Nevados de Chillan (CHI), set for 20th-24th September, the final races in the South American Cup were held at the ‘End of the World' at Cerro Castor in Ushuaia (ARG) on 15th September. In the end, the SAC overall title went for 11th time to the technical specialist Christian Javier Simari Birkner (ARG) who collected 566 points. Teammate 20-year-old Sebastiano Gastaldi finished 2nd with 392 points, ahead of France's Geoffrey Mattei. Germany's Tobias Stechert claimed the SAC downhill title for 2011, while in SG it was a tie between Bostjan Kline (SLO) and Jeremy Elliot (USA). On the ladies' side, the Simari Birkner sisters Maria Belen and Macarena also continued their domination, with Maria Belen also clinching her 11th title. Noelle Barahona of Chile took 3rd. Maria Belen Simari Birkner also won the slalom and giant slalom rankings while Russia's Alexandra Prokopyeva took the downhill and super-G titles. This year's Australia-New Zealand Cup (ANC) ended in Swedish hands. The overall victory went to Tim Lindgren with runner-up teammate Calle Lindh just 49 points behind (509 vs 460). Grant Jampolsky of the USA finished 3rd. The Swedes also shared the event titles with two each. Meanwhile, the ladies' ANC title was conquered by local talent, 15-year-old Greta Small. Norway's Rikke Gasmann-Brott and Anna Sorokina (RUS) completed the podium. Compared with the SAC, no downhill races were held down under, but the series included a super combined with a super-G staged at Mt Hutt. Only a giant slalom (one each for ladies and men) was lost during the series, at the finals at Mt Hutt (NZL). After the opening at Mt Hotham in mid-August, the ANC saw races at Coronet Peak and Mt Hutt in New Zealand over between 22nd August and 9th September. |
