Successful Audi FIS Ski World Cup opening
The Audi FIS Ski World Cup opening in Sölden is more than just a ski race. Already Wednesday night, the small town in the heart of the Tirol region started its season celebration. Numerous press conferences by the main ski industry companies and top athletes were followed by the traditional FIS Forum Alpinum and several other events, such as the popular street parade of fan clubs - Sölden showed it was ready to open the season with a bang and more than 26'000 spectators came to enjoy the competitions and soak up the atmosphere on the Rettenbach glacier.
In bright sunshine, on a course which according to the athletes was better prepared than ever before, and in front of thousands of cheering fans, Sölden's competitions once again proved to be exciting and showing top level skiing, wetting the appetite for the rest of the season. Traditionally, the ladies started the season on Saturday and after missing out on the overall 2011 World Cup title by three points, Lindsey Vonn was determined to hit this season harder than ever before. She couldn't have packed a bigger punch than the one she delivered in the opening giant slalom race, landing the victory and her first ever win in a World Cup giant slalom. The reigning World Cup giant slalom champion Viktoria Rebensburg narrowly missed out on her second straight victory in Sölden by just 0.04 seconds, taking second, while Elisabeth Goergl, who hadn't been on a GS podium since her bronze medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, landed third place, 0.40 seconds back.
By putting together two flawless runs, Ted Ligety showed once again to be the king of giant slalom in the men's race. Whilst Ligety proved to be unbeatable, for many the biggest surprise of the day came from the young French athlete Alexis Pinturault. The reigning giant slalom junior world champion showed that his first career World Cup podium last year in Kranjska Gora was no accident when he finished second again on Sunday, only 0.29 seconds behind Ligety. Austria's Philipp Schoerghofer rounded out the podium in third to the delight of the home fans.
