Asian Winter Games underway in Almaty-Astana The Asian Winter Games began in Almaty-Astana, Kazakhstan on Sunday 30th January and will last until 6th February. 11 disciplines, among them Alpine, Cross-Country and Freestyle Skiing as well as Ski Jumping, will be contested among athletes from all over Asia. The Asian Games, also called the Asiad, are regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The first Asian Games, in the summer, were held at New Delhi in 1951. The first winter edition of the event was held in Sapporo, Japan, in 1986. After the 6th edition in Changchun, China in 2007, Astana is hosting the seventh edition of the Asian Winter Games currently.
