FIS Grand Prix: Morgenstern claims first victory
In the middle of July, two weeks earlier than in previous years, the 2011 FIS Grand Prix successfully kicked off in Poland.
Austrian Thomas Morgenstern has not lost any of his strength from the past winter and won the opening competition in Wisla last Sunday. The World Champion from Oslo moved up to the top from eighth after the first round at the Adam-Malysz-Hill. With jumps of 119.5 metres and 129 metres Morgenstern reached a total of 236.7 points.
It was however a really close decision: Russian Pavel Karelin, who was surprisingly in the lead after the first round, kept his nerve in the final round and made a great jump of 129.5 metres. With 235.3 points, he finished second only 1.4 points behind the winner. Third place was taken by Morgenstern's teammate Gregor Schlierenzauer with 231.4 points
Morgenstern, who has already won the overall ranking of the FIS Grand Prix in 2003 and 2007, is now one of the favourites for the upcoming competitions starting with Szczyrk (POL) this Wednesday to put himself in a strong position to once again take the overall Grand Prix victory.
