Tragic passing of Pavel Karelin FIS sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Pavel Karelin. The 21-year-old Russian ski jumping talent died in a car accident in Russia on 9th October 2011. The accident happened at about 4:00 am near his hometown Nizhni Nowgorod, about 400 km east of Moscow. It has been reported that it was already too late for the athlete to be saved when rescuers arrived on site after the accident. Two other persons were in the car, and both were seriously injured. Karelin was considered one of the greatest hopes in Russian Ski Jumping with a view to the Sochi 2014 Games. He earned his first World Cup podium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) last season, as well as at the FIS Grand Prix competition in Wisla (POL) in July. With him, the FIS family loses a promising athlete, who was well-respected by everyone. |
