New spectator record for Adelboden, Wengen

New spectator record for Adelboden, Wengen

The men's Audi FIS Ski World Cup races in the Bernese Oberland are continuing to grow their appeal year after year. In the last two weeks, during which the Swiss Classics in Adelboden and Wengen hosted a total of five World Cup competitions, yet another new record was set as, for the first time, more than 100'000 spectators visited the two events. A record 42'000 ski enthusiasts were on hand in Adelboden for the giant slalom and slalom events on 8th-9th January. Last weekend in Wengen, 18'000 people attended the super combined race on Friday, 35'000 visited Saturday's downhill and another 9'000 turned out for the slalom on Sunday. Altogether 62'000 fans were in attendance during the 81st edition of the Lauberhorn races, which beat the previous record from 2010 by 4'000. With a total of 104'000 spectators, the Bernese Oberland races averaged more than 20'000 spectators each!

At the same time, the ladies' Audi FIS Ski World Cup tour was struggling with unseasonably warm temperatures that were prevalent in Central Europe last week. Due to safety and fairness reasons, the ladies two-race technical weekend in Maribor (SLO) could not be staged as the snow quality no longer met the needs of World Cup racing. The cancelled competitions from Maribor (SLO) will not be rescheduled before the World Ski Championships in February. Whether the competitions can be rescheduled will be decided in due time.
