Festival in Snow at GAP 2011 continues

The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are in full swing and approaching the final phase with the ladies' and men's technical events. After the successful completion of all the ladies' and men's speed events, the super combined and the Nations Team event, FIS President Gian-Franco Kasper is satisfied with GAP 2011's "Festival in the Snow".

"The slogan definitely delivered what it promised during the first part of the World Championship competitions," Kasper said. "Things are going very well so far, the organization has been impeccable, the weather excellent, the snow conditions good and the audience great and fair," Kasper added. "We had a very good start with the opening ceremony in the presence of Chancellor Angela Merkel, followed by a first German medal already on the opening race day had a positive effect on the audience."

"We heard some critical voices regarding the icy slopes but the race courses were fair, well prepared and challenging. All athletes have their preferences concerning snow conditions and it is normal and expected that there will be discussions on that topic," said Kasper. "In retrospect, the hard and icy pistes at the beginning of the Championships were an advantage in light of the warm temperatures that followed in the days after."

After 7 of 11 events, all of which took place as scheduled, Austria clearly leads the medals table with five podium finishes (3 gold, 2 silver). Italy follows in second place with four medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) and three nations, namely France, Canada and Norway, share third spot, each having claimed one gold medal. A total of 11 nations have won medals so far.
