Kearney and Colas claim overall Freestyle titles
After 64 successfully completed competitions, the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup came to an end last weekend in Myrkdalen-Voss (NOR) and La Plagne (FRA). Organizing competitions at 22 different locations in 14 nations requires a lot of work and planning. There were no cancellations due to poor weather or major delays, neither were there any serious injuries. All competitions enjoyed live TV productions except USA, and the TV distribution has increased significantly. The successful season owes much to professional organizers and experienced teams.
Several athletes were in the fight for the globes to the ‘bitter end', including the overall World Cup title which was only decided at the very last event. For Guilbaut Colas (FRA), it was his first overall World Cup title after finishing second the last four years. Hannah Kearney (USA) extended her collection of globes after having won the overall World Cup in 2009, and finishing third last year.
was clearly the dominant nation this season, and the interest around this spectacular sport is still increasing in the Asian region. Talented European athletes should be mentioned including Olga Volkova from Ukraine, who finished third, and last year's winner, Anton Kushnir (BLR) as well as the established Renato Ulrich (SUI) who all made it to the top 3 in the aerials standings. By having more nations on the podium, potential for developing the sport and recruiting new athletes increases.In aerials, both crystal globes went to Chinese athletes. China also grabbed the Nations Cup globe, leading with over 700 points with Ukraine as the runner-up. China
The Canadians have a long tradition when it comes to moguls skiing, which once again was evident with Canadian athletes finishing second and third in both ladies and men's overall moguls World Cup title, in addition to winning the Nations Cup in moguls. The moguls star of the year, however, was Hannah Kearney of the USA. Out of the 10 competitions she competed in, she won no less than 9 and finished second in the remaining one. The 25-year-old said: "I should set more goals. I wanted to win both the moguls and the overall but I didn't know I was going to do it by winning nine events. It is really, really satisfying." With the Canadian challenger Jennifer Heil ending her outstanding career this year, Kearney will aim her sights on a triple of moguls titles next season.
Ski cross which was first added to the FIS Freestyle World Cup in 2002 has attracted massive interest since the very beginning. An exciting fight for the World Cup further contributed to growing interest this season: On the ladies side, a tight fight between Heidi Zacher (GER), Anna Holmlund (SWE) and Kelsey Serwa (CAN) was not decided until the last competition in Voss-Myrkdalen last weekend. Holmlund, who won all her starts there, celebrated both the final victory for the season as well as the ski cross globe. An extremely good season by Zacher allowed her to climb a whopping 28 ranks on the ski cross ranking compared to last year. On the men's side, Andreas Matt (AUT) scored a comfortable victory in season rankings although the circuit missed the title holder Mike Schmid (SUI) who was out of action due to injury. With a margin of 200 points Matt won the ski cross globe ahead of Christopher DelBosco (CAN) and Jouni Pellinen (FIN).
The last World Cup event of the season took place in La Plagne, to settle the battle for the halfpipe globe. Canadian stars Sarah Burke and Rosalind Groenewoud shared 1st place in the rankings. Virgine Faivre (SUI) finished third, only 15 points behind. On the men's side, Benoit Valentin and Xavier Bertond from France took 1st and 2nd, respectively, closely followed by David Wise (USA).
