Who's who of winter sports enjoying great snow in New Zealand

After the poor start to winter 2011 across New Zealand following the country's warmest ever May and temperatures staying largely just above freezing in June, the past month has seen the rapid onset of winter across the country, and another 15cm of snow in the past few days on Mt Ruapehu has seen snow depths pass the two meter mark at Turoa.

A who's who of the world's top winter sports athletes is about to arrive in Queenstown, Lake Wanaka, Naseby and Dunedin this week for the second 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games, due to start this weekend.

Entered last weekend, the Russian Cross-Country team featuring multiple Olympic medalists Alexander Panzhinskiy, Alexey Petukhov and Nikita Kriukov will join Polish Olympic gold medalist Justyna Kowalcyzk in what promises to be an exciting opening competition at Snow Farm, Lake Wanaka on 13th August.
The snowboardcross event features world number one, Alex Pullin from Australia while the skicross field includes world number three, Fanny Smith (SUI) and Olympians Scott Kneller (USA) and Mitchey Greig (NZE).

Members of the New Zealand, USA, Canadian and Japanese Alpine Ski teams will already be meeting fans at the Coronet Peak ski area deck on Sunday as part of Coronet Peak's Kid's Day Out.

"Ski and sports fans and many aspiring young skiers will look forward to meeting the likes of Bode Miller (USA), Ted Ligety (USA), Marco Sullivan (USA), Andrew Weibrecht (USA), Resi Steigler (USA), Julia Mancuso (USA), Hailey Duke (USA), Mike Janyk (CAN) and local boys Ben Griffin and Tim Café," said Coronet Peak Head of Race and Events, Richard Murphy

"We'll literally have some of the best male and female alpine ski racers on the planet signing autographs for all. They've been hard at work training on Coronet Peak's designated race training area and have loved the conditions we've had and the snow injection system we use which makes the runs hard and consistent, which is what they need.

100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games takes place from 13th-28th August 2011. For more information click here.
